ABA 2009 Annual Meeting in Chicago July 30 - August 4

Proceedings of the House Of Delegates Available Live on the Web

The American Bar Association will once again be making the proceedings of the House of Delegates available via webcast. The two-day meeting, Aug. 3-4, in Chicago can be viewed live on your computer. The meeting starts Monday at 9 a.m. Central Time (CST) and is expected to continue until about 5 p.m. and then resume Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. when Mayor Richard J. Daley is expected to welcome the members. One of the meeting highlights are remarks by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder which is set for 2:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3. The Opening Assembly which is free of charge to all registrants and their guests is set to be held at the Symphony Center Sat., Aug. 1, at 5:30 p.m. Governor Pat Quinn is scheduled to open the Assembly with keynote speaker the Honorable David H. Souter, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. The President’s Reception immediately will follow at the Art Institute.

A special program entitled “The Assumption of Justice: A Town Hall Dialogue on Color, Ethnicity and the Courts, Part II” will be held on Thursday, July 30, at 1:30-4:30 p.m., at Northwestern University School of Law, Rubloff Building Atrium, 375 E. Chicago Av., Chicago. Spearheaded by Judge Michael B. Hyman of the Cook County Circuit Court and member of the Illinois delegation, the Town Hall Meeting is sponsored by the ABA Judicial Division Lawyers Conference, the ABA Council on Racial and Ethnic Justice and the ABA Coalition for Justice. Its purpose is to bring together local leaders, the courts and the general public to work together to improve the public’s perception and experiences in the courts. An all-star cast of panelists will be on hand to discuss the importance issues surrounding this topic. Please RSVP that you will be attending to fairleyg@staff.abanet.org.

The House of Delegates will consider a number of proposals. Click here to view a Summary of Recommendations. that will be considered by the House.

Among the proposals is Report 122 from the Standing Committee on Public Education which urges policymakers to establish a Coordinating Office of Civic Education in the U.S. Department of Education that would serve to enhance students’ civic learning by offering competitive grant programs at the local, state and national levels.

If you are attending, please remember at registration to vote for six of the 11 candidates who are running for Delegate-at-Large for the House of Delegates. I intend to vote for the following candidates and encourage you to do the same:
