1 dead, 1 hurt in West Side Crash

One man is dead and another seriously injured after a car crashed into a tree early Saturday in the West Side’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said.The crash happened at 2:02 a.m. in the 4700 block of West Augusta Boulevard, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said.Juan Carmona, 30, of 1941 N. Spaulding Ave., was involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident at North Cicero Avenue and West August Boulevard, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at 2:55 a.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital. 

Police said a Ford Explorer crossed the centerline for an unknown reason and struck a tree. Two men in the sport-utility vehicle were hospitalized, and one man died from his injuries, police said. The survivor was taken to an unidentified hospital with abdominal and leg injuries and is in surgery Saturday morning, police said.It was not immediately known why the driver lost control of the SUV. The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
